AMCO CASE STUDY
Pre-Construction Geotechnical Inspection
Client: AMCO
Service Delivered: Geological Slope Inspection and Vegetation Clearance
Location: Saltley, Birmingham, NW&C – West Coast South
Project: Culvert 6A Permanent Wingwall Repair
Background
As part of Network Rail’s infrastructure resilience programme, AMCO were commissioned to deliver permanent repairs to a deteriorated wingwall adjacent to Culvert 6A beneath the SAS line in Saltley, Birmingham. The project required the installation of a sheet pile wall, which presented potential vibration risks to sensitive earthworks and the existing culvert brickwork.
To ensure asset stability and to identify any pre-existing vulnerabilities, GeoAccess were appointed to carry out a detailed pre-construction slope inspection. The aim was to record the condition of the embankment and highlight any areas that could be affected by the proposed remedial works.
Method
GeoAccess deployed a specialist team consisting of an IRATA-trained Geotechnical Engineer and a rope access vegetation clearance crew. Safe systems of work and COSS supervision were provided by AMCO.
The team performed an enhanced vegetation clearance in accordance with Network Rail Standard NR/L3/CIV/065, using handheld cutting tools and rope access methods. Approximately 50 metres on either side of the culvert were cleared, with widened strips immediately above the structure to achieve full visibility.
This clearance enabled a detailed geotechnical slope inspection, including visual observations, photographic records, and condition assessments across both embankment faces.
Innovations & Solutions
Access to the site was achieved efficiently via the high-mileage side, using the controlled removal of palisade fencing with an angle grinder.
This innovative access method eliminated the need for a line block, reducing disruption to rail operations and improving project efficiency while maintaining high safety standards.
Results & Conclusion
GeoAccess delivered a comprehensive pre-construction inspection report that detailed the condition of the embankment and identified potential stability risks associated with vibration and construction activity.
The deployment of an experienced earthworks examiner ensured that accurate and reliable field data was collected.
Through its specialist rope access capability, GeoAccess demonstrated how bespoke access techniques can minimise railway possession requirements, optimise project logistics, and support safe, data-driven asset management for both Network Rail and AMCO.
